I Have Already Donated More Than 1 Billion to the Public Treasury- Atangana Kouna

The former Minister of Water and Energy claims to have paid into the public coffers more than a billion CFA francs in the Camwater case.

The former Minister of Water and Energy, Basile Atangana Kouna, wants the Special Criminal Court (Tcs), to abandon the legal proceedings against him, in the case of alleged misappropriation of public funds, where The State of Cameroon and the Camwater have constituted themselves as civil parties.

On April 11, 2018, Me Yossa Kamga, counsel for Basile Atangana Kouna, seized by correspondence the attorney general at the said court:

"Acting on behalf of the appointed Massart Jacques Michel Viviane and Atangana Kouna, Basil, we come very respectfully after your high kindness, informing you that as of April 9, 2015, we have returned the body of the offense in the case in reference and this in accordance with the declaration of revenue treasure no. 7003995 in the amount of: one billion seven hundred and thirty-six million four hundred and one thousand eight hundred and sixty Cfa. 

We therefore kindly ask you to make the provisions of Article 3 paragraph 1 of Decree N02013 / 288 of 4 September 2013 setting the terms for restitution of the body of offense ", says the lawyer of the former minister of the Water and Energy.

It was on March 23 that Basile Atangana Kouna was detained in Kondengui Central Prison after being arrested the previous day in Nigeria, where he had tried to flee. 

According to the law of 4 September 2013 establishing the special criminal court that his lawyer refers to in the correspondence, this article mentions that: "The Attorney General of the Special Criminal Court may, on the proposal of the Minister of Justice, order the prosecution in case of restitution of the body of crime ".

Since the creation of the Tcs in 2012, only Haman Adama, the former Minister of Basic Education had benefited from this provision.
