Peacekeeping In The Central African Republic: UN Investigates Possibility Of Sending Extra Peacekeepers

The Security Council has been studying since Monday the report of the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, returning from a mission on the ground.

Antonio Guterres brought his report on the situation in the Central African Republic to the Security Council on Monday, a few days after his visit to the country.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) reports a growing deterioration of the security and humanitarian situation.

The document speaks of nearly 600,000 displaced people and nearly half a million refugees in neighboring countries.

Given the seriousness of the situation, the UN boss is seeking 900 additional troops to support the 10,250 men already on site in the Central African Republic. According to Mr. Guterres, with these additional troops, the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), will be more flexible for a better deployment of peacekeepers in areas at risk.
But the Secretary-General's report is far from unanimous in the Security Council. Indeed, the United States is strongly opposed to any increase in troops for the UN mission in the Central African Republic. On the contrary, Washington, which demanded and obtained the reduction of the envelope for peacekeeping operations, is rather favorable for their reduction.

While Italy, which holds the rotating presidency of this UN institution, is trying to reassure the ongoing negotiations for a consensus on the issue. But, Antonio Guterres camps on his position, referring to the reality on the ground.

In an interview with Radio France Internationale (RFI) last October, he suggested that this conflict is a "dramatic crisis, a forgotten crisis". "Central Africa is very far from the attention of the international community.

The level of suffering of the people, but also the tragedies suffered by the humanitarian and peacekeepers, deserve more solidarity and attention, "said the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
