Howick Man Sentenced to 15 Years Imprisonment for Each Rape

On 25 May 2016 the accused, Lucky Mkhize (27) was convicted and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court.

The victim (62) was at Tweedie informal settlement on 6 February 2011 at about 21:00 when she was approached by the accused.

The accused raped the victim before he fled the scene. A case of rape was opened at Howick police station and thereafter it was transferred to Howick Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual offences Unit.

The members looked for the accused but could not find him as he was unknown to the victim. In 2014 another case of rape was opened at Howick area and the accused was immediately arrested.

DNA samples were taken and the accused was linked to the rape case that was reported in 2011. Therefor he was charged for two rape cases. He was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for each rape case.

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa praised the Howick FCS detectives in their persistence in stopping the rapists from terrorising the community. "We hope that this sentence will serve as a warning to the would-be perpetrators that should they think of doing such acts of crime, they will face the full mighty of the law" he said.
