French Cameroun Women Wants Greater Representation in Political Sphere

Various actions are reportedly being undertaken in French Cameroun for a greater representation of women in the political sphere, through the consortium “Democracy for Women”, whose initiative is supported by the European Union (EU) and the ministry for the Advancement of Women and the Family (MINPROFF).

Through advocacy, lobbying and other actions, measures are being implemented to increase the number of women competing in the upcoming elections in 2018.

According to figures from the ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralization (MINAT), there are only 26 women out of the 374 heads of the communal territories in Cameroon, or an average of 6.95 %.

In the National Assembly, only 56 out the 180 MPs are women, which representation is 31%, while in the Senate there are 20 women out of 100 members.

In the run-up to the 2018 municipal and legislative elections, the issue of women’s representation has been raised again with several activities being taken to bolster the participation of women in politics, with the aim of reaching a target of 30%.
