Britney Spears to perform at MTV Video Music Awards for first time in 10 years

Britney Spears is returning to the MTV Video Music Awards for the first time in nearly 10 years.

MTV says the singer will perform her latest single, Make Me..., at its show in New York's Madison Square Garden next Sunday night.

Rapper G-Eazy, who features on the track, will perform with her. Britney last performed at the 2007 VMAs in Las Vegas.

The 34-year-old will release her new album, Glory, two days before the VMAs.

Britney Spears announced the MTV performance by releasing a video on her social media accounts.

"The VMAs don't just give you a stage," she says. "They give you a story, some way of taking a fraction of a second and making it live forever.

"Before you know it, it's history."

Britney's VMA career has included five wins and 28 nominations.

Beyonce is this year's leading nominee with 11, followed by Adele, who earned eight nominations.

They'll compete for video of the year against Kanye West, Justin Bieber and Drake.

Rihanna will also perform at the live show and receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

Britney's appearance at the 2001 MTV VMAs in New York, where she sang Slave 4 U with a python as a prop, is still considered one of her iconic performances.

But her slot at the 2007 event in Las Vegas didn't go as well.

Critics said she mimed but her lips were out of sync to the music and that she flailed her arms and body around without much rhythm.

Britney Spears has sold more than 100 million records worldwide.

Six of her eight studio albums have gone to number one in the US chart and she's had five number one singles on the Official Singles Chart in the UK, including her 1998 debut ...Baby One More Time, Oops!... I Did It Again and Toxic.
