Twine Phiri in U.S.$67 000 Maintenance Arrears

FORMER Premier Soccer League chairman Twine Phiri yesterday appeared in court for failing to pay maintenance for his three minor children which has now accrued to $67 551. Phiri (48) was facing four counts of failure to pay maintenance when he appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe.

However, the matter was postponed to May 5 after his lawyer told the court that they had not received State papers.

According to the State, on April 28, 2014 a Chitungwiza magistrate ordered the former CAPS United owner to pay for educational needs, medical bills and examination fees for his three minor children with effect from April 31, 2014.

The court heard that Phiri failed to pay for educational needs (trips and transport to school), medical bills and examination fees amounting to $1 277. On the second count, it is alleged that Phiri failed to buy school uniforms at a cost of $1 232. On the third count, allegations are that Phiri failed to pay school fees for third term of 2015 for two children and is owing $3 467.

Allegations on the fourth count are that Phiri was ordered by the Chitungwiza magistrate to pay maintenance fees of $2 913 for the three minors with effect from March 2014 but was instead paying $450 per month for the period extending March 2014 to March 2016.

He is now $61 575 in arrears.
